Moto Actions responds to simple gestures to make daily tasks quick and easy. Such as Chopp twice for turn on the flashlight and Twist to open the camera. This group of features are one of the most iconic things remembered by Motorola user's, the use of gestures to trigger features instead of UI is a signature of their devices.
My responsibility as the UX Lead for the project was to evolve this to include new kinds of actions. Intelligent ones, that would work improving the usage of the phone without the user need to worry about it.
The first feature of this kind was the Night Display, that filters the blue light that suppresses the secretion of melatonin (a hormone that influences the circadian rhythm), and may help users to sleep better. This was designed from scratch in collaboration with the display technology team in China since it's was a feature connected with a specific hardware.
Different approaches were designed and tested in order to clarify the benefits and how the feature works. And most important, that the feature only requires interaction once on the setup.
Night Display consolidated itself as the first it's kind on Motorola products quickly becoming the most activated and used feature of Moto App. Later we also identified the need for pause at specific moments such as taking or looking photos or while watch videos. So we designed a persistent notification while the feature is active so users can easily pause and resume it.
